The North-South Institute, Inc. begins its annual training of small business participants, producers, and other agricultural professionals in unique thematic modules on business planning, marketing, risk management, tax and financial planning, specialty food enterprises, among a wide variety of others. Starting each January, participants are invited to attend our session in-person or online through our Training & Outreach Program where they will obtain informative lectures and apply newly gained technical skills. The presentations and on-site demonstrations are conducted by top professionals in the respective fields and are implement using thematic modules containing copyrighted curriculum created by the Institute. Annual programs culminate with placement of selected participants through internships, apprenticeships with private sector as well as on the Small farm and Business Incubator Call (954) 434-8220 or email [email protected] for more.
Our Technical Assistance and Outreach use the Comprehensive Hub and Extension Spokes Strategy (CHESS). CHESS is an extremely industry centric, public-private partnership community cluster participatory approach where significant inputs are provided by key stakeholders in defining project objectives and the requisite activities to achieve the desired outcomes. The activities ensure that targeted producers/stakeholders in the selected clusters gain access to and use Federal Program services and resources while simultaneously matching their own resources in developing sustainable and profitable enterprise/farms and ranches. In addition, the training component assists socially disadvantaged, veteran, women tenant, and youth farmers and ranchers to enhance their skillsets, so that they can start their own businesses or become employed in Agriculture, Allied Industries, and Auxiliary Enterprises. The strategy leverages established partnerships consisting of underserved producers, Non-governmental organizations/community-based organizations (NGOs/CBOs), Local Schools, Faith-Based Organizations, Civic Service Organizations, Private Industry Stakeholders, and University Partners. Key extension activities include: Listening Session, Field Days, Field Demonstrations, Charrettes, Focus Groups Meetings, Townhalls, Farmer School Days, Farm Talks, Enterprise Audits and Diagnostic Assessments, Best Management Practice (BMP) Study Tours and BMP Industrial Visits.
