Beginning Farmers & Rachel Women, Girls, and Youth Initiative
Beginning Farmers and Ranchers (BFR), especially small to medium farms (>1- <80 acres), engaged in Specialty Food Enterprises (Small Livestock’s, Crops, and Honeybee) are faced with challenges that are likely to thwart their efforts to continue farming. Working with BFRs has shown that shocks from disasters e.g., hurricanes, freezes, floods and droughts can have debilitating effects, curtailing farmers in their early stages. In addition, structural challenges, including access to capital and sustainable markets, further exacerbate the existence and longevity of BFRs. The long-term goal of this project is to develop tools and demonstrate how beginning farmers can become resilient when faced with these shocks and structural business challenges. The project will implement (i) demonstrations to beneficiaries’ explaining the methods and processes of two Quick Response Tools for Rapid Farm Redevelopment: (ii) training in Business Planning, Farm Record Keeping, Production, and Food Safety.
